Resumen: This paper investigates whether the trade effects of environmental non-tariff measures (NTMs) differ across industries, with a focus on agriculture. We hypothesize that sectoral heterogeneity matters, as agriculture’s distinctive policy framework and trade structure may lead to unique responses to environmental regulations. Preliminary evidence suggests that environmental NTMs tend to enhance trade in agricultural industries while exerting negative effects elsewhere. We explore potential mechanisms related to the structure of the industries, domestic supply, and regulatory similarity. The study contributes to debates on environmental trade policy, industrial policy, and agricultural sustainability, applying recent advances in gravity modeling to industry-level data.
