Created in 2004 by Dr. José Darío Uribe Escobar, by then Deputy Technical Governor, and later, Governor of Banco de la República (2005-2016), to do economic research in social areas, and to have an academic interaction with public and private, international, national, and local institutions. The GAMMA group produces economic research in applied microeconomics in topics that include labor markets, education, health, quality of life, crime, subsidies, inequality, poverty, childcare, international migration, local public finance, public utility services, etc. To promote the diffusion of knowledge the group has a periodic Seminar in Economics, and seminars jointly organized with multilateral banks, universities and local NGOs, and has co-organized LACEA 2010 and LACEA-LAMES 2016, with some of its members chairing its scientific committees. Its members also take part of academic roles both at the national and local level, as in the Committee on Monetary Poverty of the Administrative Department of National Statistics of Colombia, DANE, the Employment Committee of the Alcaldía de Medellín, and the Academic Committees of LACEA, the Centro de Pensamiento Social and the Prize to the Quality of Education promoted by public and private institutions of Medellín.
