Profile:

I am the Head of Research at the central bank of Colombia (Banco de la República). I oversee the Macroeconomic Modeling Division and the Division of Economic Policy Studies, as well as several regional economic research units. The Macroeconomic Modeling Division coordinates the quarterly macroeconomic forecasts and maintains the Bank’s macroeconomic models. The Division of Economic Policy Studies supervises the publication of a series of policy papers that are relevant for monetary policy and economic policy in general. I am also part of the monetary policy group, a group that advises the Board on monetary policy issues.

My areas of expertise are macroeconomic modeling and econometrics. I have consulted for the European Central Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the Inter-American Development Bank, the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning in Rwanda, for the Institute for Capacity Development (ICD) of the IMF and several central banks in Central America. In the years 2013 and 2014, I worked at Universidad de Los Andes in Bogotá as an Associate Professor in Economics and from 2014 to 2017 I worked for the International Monetary Fund. During this time, I helped the Honduras Central Bank to develop the core forecasting model.

I research on two related areas. First, I study the business cycles fluctuations using panel DSGE models. This approach allows me to quantify the role of common and idiosyncratic factors in explaining the business cycles. In the second line of research, I study the interaction between financial frictions and the cyclical behavior of the informal economy. Informality in Latin America and Central America is large and understanding its macroeconomic implications is a priority.

I hold a Ph.D. in Economics and Econometrics from the Stockholm School of Economics.
